In 2018, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. I absolutely love this continent. It offers incredible nature, culture and experiences that you cannot find anywhere else.
In a sense, I feel like traveling Africa is the only “real” traveling that I’ve ever done.
That all being said, I cannot ignore the fact that I am treated differently because of my skin color.
I have noticed a lot more scamming and bribery happening to me in African countries than anywhere else. Some of the scariest travel situations I’ve been in happened to me here, and thus, I need to take extra caution of every decision I make.
I know this post will get a lot of hate mail, and that’s okay. I want to hear your opinions, thoughts and suggestions on this subject.
I could lie to you guys and say that Africa is 100% safe as a non-black person, but that’s just not the case. Perhaps it would be safer if I didn’t travel solo, but I always have.
I have felt racism in Africa the same way that black people feel racism in the U.S., or Asians in Europe, or Hispanics in Australia. The point of this video is that if you physically stand out in any place, you will be treated differently. And I wish someday, in this amazing world of ours, that this will not be the case.
