I have finally met with the LONG NECK tribe of Northern Thailand – and they are truly some of the most fascinating humans on earth!
As you probably know, my favorite thing to do when traveling is to discover and interact with the most local people I can find. To eat their food, observe their homes and experience first-hand how they survive.
I’ve spent quality time with the Himba tribe of Namibia, the Mursi tribe of Ethiopia and the Huli tribe of Papua New Guinea. But never have I seen women wearing dozens of heavy metal rings around their neck… until I came to Northern Thailand!!
They wear the rings (traditionally) to protect from tiger bites, but also to differentiate from the other hi tribes of Myanmar/Thailand.. and of course, it’s also a beauty/fashion thing!
The long necks are actually refugees from Myanmar who crossed the border in the 18th century and never returned back home. There are some 40,000 of them remaining today, mostly up in the mountains near the Burma border.
