I JUST VISITED THE WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS SLUM IN VENEZUELA and it was one of the craziest experiences of my life. It’s called Petare, and it’s basically a sub-district of Caracas with a population of over 1 million people who live on the top of a mountain.
None of my local Venezuelan friends ever has the courage to venture deep inside Petare before, but together we decided to give it a try and it was eye opening to say the least. We ended up making a local friend, Marquito, who showed us around, invited us into his home and introduced us to his family & friends.
There was one moment on the street where things got pretty tense, but other than that, it was safer than I expected and it a humbling experience to meet with the people and feel their energy. Even though they may not have much, they are very friendly and welcoming people and I would go back in a heartbeat.
