I’ve come to Bhutan. I’ve asked several people when they were born, and they couldn’t give me an answer… because they don’t know.
The Bhutanese genuinely believe that leading a happy life is more important than how many years you’ve been alive (birthday). If that doesn’t make you smile, then I don’t know what will 🙂
Instead of recognizing individual birthdays – they decided that all citizens turn 1 year older every Jan 1st. So everyone celebrates a birthday on New Year’s Day!
While this system is more prevalent in the older generation (younger kids living in cities do know their birthdays) — it’s still proves how fascinating this country is. I’ve never been to a place where people don’t know their birthdays, and don’t care to know. They just want to life in peace.
The sun rises everyday. The sun sets everyday. Life happens. Age doesn’t matter. That’s Bhutan in a nutshell. And I love this country.
